The 120 members of CUPE 5439 at the Hillcrest (Re)Activation Centre
are hospital staff, no different than thousands of hospital workers at multiple University Health Network (UHN) sites throughout Toronto.

In October 2017, the province announced funds for more hospital beds and the reopening of UHN’s former Hillcrest Centre to better accommodate alternate level of care (ALC) patients.

In December 2017, UHN opened the Hillcrest Reactivation Centre’s to provide hospital patients requiring an Alternate Level of Care (ALC), in partnership with Saint Elizabeth Health Care.

Statements from UHN and the provincial health minister (at the time) make it clear that the 75 beds at the Hillcrest Activation Centre are an extension of UHN hospital-based patient care.

Here’s what UHN and the health minister said in 2017:
“Hillcrest Reactivation Centre will offer patients transitioning from hospital the opportunity to work together with a supportive team, to optimize their return to the community. By collaborating with Saint Elizabeth Health Care, we are looking forward to contributing to this evolution of Ontario’s health care system.” – Susan Jewell, Senior Vice President and Executive Lead for Toronto Rehab

The investment in the Hillcrest Reactivation Centre is part of our government’s commitment to increasing access to the right care in the right setting. This funding is further evidence of how we are putting patients first and improving the performance of our health care system.” – Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care

The reactivation program at Hillcrest serves several purposes, including:
• Reducing ALC pressures on acute care hospitals; reducing the need for Long-Term Care home placement;
• Expanding the current level of support and services available to this patient population (ALC), as they prepare to return to their community;
• Decreasing the risk of re-admission to an acute care hospital;
• Supporting clients regain their independence;
• Assisting clients as they transition from hospital to community in a comfortable and supportive setting.

UHN is one of Ontario’s leading teaching hospital networks. It excels at many aspects of patient care including acute, cancer care, rehab and complex continuing care. UHN is considered Canada’s top research hospital system with an international reputation.

The Hillcrest Reactivation Centre (located at UHN’s Hillcrest hospital site) is a UHN hospital site that enables the overcrowded UHN hospital system to continue to provide needed hospital care to patients who are not yet stable, mobile or well enough to return home.
